Plant skin revolution, a new environmentalism

Release time:2023-05-09

According to data from the European Parliament Service and the United Nations, the production of clothing and footwear accounts for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and polyester, the most widely used fabric in clothing, is mostly made from fossil fuels. If pure plain leather can replace some cowhide or sheepskin, the environmental impact will be enormous.

From the perspective of final recycling and treatment, pure skin made from plant-based raw materials is more easily decomposed. Take Malai's coconut water leather for example. If you want to destroy it later, it can be naturally decomposed in 150 days.

Game, Abandonment, and Future

However, we should be wary of some absolute statements, such as pure plain leather being 100% environmentally friendly.

Dr. Anika Kozlowski, Assistant Professor of Fashion Design, Ethics, and Sustainable Development at Ryerson University in Toronto, believes that many plant-based leather still contains plastic because we are using a mixture of these natural ingredients and other substances.

At present, many companies that produce leather substitutes have not disclosed every material added or used before the final product is formed, making it difficult for consumers to know whether the process is as environmentally friendly as the brand claims.

In addition, the game between the vegetable leather industry and the traditional leather industry will continue for a long time. The traditional leather industry cannot allow the fashion industry or the mass market to abandon leather in the short term. A lobbying viewpoint holds that as long as there are still people eating beef, cows will be slaughtered, and it is impossible to stop the production of cowhide. This is not entirely due to the traditional leather industry.
